CONTEXT

CrowdStreet is an online commercial real estate platform. It is a start up (series C) that has been around for 12 years. Real estate has had tough times especially after Covid but it is a long-term investment.

The investor’s experience is vital to the company’s success, and my job as the lead product designer was to ensure that the entire user journey was seamless and frictionless.

MY APPROACH

In the discovery phases of a project, I always try to get clear on the foundational elements. For example, “what problem are we trying to solve?” “and is this really the problem that we should be solving?” It’s important to not just take any requests, but to question if it indeed has value/impact for our customers/business. It’s also important to understand what the goals and success metrics are. I work closely with cross-functional partners and stakeholders to clearly define what it is that we’re doing and WHY. And to make sure we are all on the same page, I document our decisions, notes in a written doc. Usually, these projects start with a PRD (Product Requirement Document), so I like to work closely with the PMs to help define the requirements.

In the beginning, I’ll explore using low-fidelity methods (sketching, wires, etc). We might do some workshops, journey mapping, or brainstorming sessions. The above pics are from an offsite where I facilitated the user journey for the new onboarding experience.

I work closely with stakeholders, leaders and team to understand the business and how we can bring our vision to reality.
